Why ‘80s Culture is Still Popular Today

From: Why ’80s music is still popular – Antenna Radio

“Today, ’80s music continues to be popular because it is nostalgic for many people. It brings back memories of a simpler time when life was perhaps less complicated. Additionally, the ’80s was a time of significant social change, and the music reflects that. It is an era that is still relevant today.” says author, Kimberly Albores.

We at Harvest Porch are big fans of ‘80s music. In fact, I am listening to it as I write this! Almost every song that plays brings me back to a day back in my childhood that I remember hearing it. Whether I was waiting to hit the record button on my boom box on a Saturday Night during the Top 8 at 8:00 PM, laying in my bed doing my homework, watching MTV (when they actually played videos,) or walking around the mall with my best friends after school. Great times, yes, simpler times, absolutely.

Do you remember what the first music video was that played on MTV on August 1, 1981? Check it out here: MTV Debut 8/1/81 Opening and 1st Video – YouTube. Many of the most popular bands from the ‘80s are still touring, and selling out, today! Check out your local concert venues for “Foreigner”, Def Leppard”, Red Hot Chili Peppers”, and my favorite, “Duran Duran” for tickets. I will be seeing “Duran Duran” in concert this fall with my sisters and a group of our childhood friends. We are so excited.

When “adulting” gets too stressful, I find myself tuning in to my favorite ‘80s radio or streaming station to escape, relax, and enjoy some nostalgia. Now, you can turn on the TV to shows like “Stranger Things” and “The Goldberg’s” which are turning a whole new generation into fans of this great era. We can expose our kids to wholesome shows we used to watch with the plethora of streaming channels that play shows such as “Growing Pains”, “Who’s the Boss?”, “Family Ties”, and “Saved by the Bell”. Cult classic movies such as “16 Candles”, “The Breakfast Club”, and “Pretty in Pink” are on cable TV every Saturday and still have relevance. Therefore, there are many outlets for the ‘80s pop culture to continue to thrive and increase in popularity, today.
